Do Away With Pennsylvania Toll Collectors?

Good idea or not?

"Toll collectors cost the turnpike about $70 million a year... It would cost about $320 million to install all-electronic tolling all along the turnpike network, according to a 2012 study for the turnpike commission."

My Comments About The Article Above
Ok there's a number of things here. First it would take almost 5 years (based on the 3 year old figures) before this scheme would begin to pay off. Secondly there was no mention how much it would cost to maintain and collect these tolls. More importantly; "The Turnpike Commission has no authority to block a motorist's vehicle registration or driver's license for failure to pay." So how many (especially from out of state) would even bother to send in their toll money or whether there would be a surcharge if they pay online. Should someone be forced into paying more if they don't buy into the E-ZPass program?

One other consideration, the 750 employees who could lose their jobs. There was no mention about taxes these employees pay back or spent in the state in the form of income, sales taxes, etc.. Nor how many would cash out their pensions.

What are your thoughts?
