Should Weak Candidates Get Out Of Race?
This issue has been raised should weak or under funded candidates quit the race for governor in Pennsylvania? My short answer is, absolutely not!
One need look no further then the long shot John Brown (mayor of Bangor) who won the executive seat in Northampton County. It appeared he had neither the experience, money nor political support he needed to win and yet managed to pull it off.
Some are concerned these candidates would become spoilers for the rest of the party candidates. That may be true in the final elections but that simply is not the case going into the May primaries.
This is like equating the Phillies should have quit because the team's 2013 salaries were $69,417,731 less then the New York Yankees. Why host football playoffs when we already figured the Philadelphia Eagles weren't going to end up in the 2014 Super Bowl anyway? Why should a parent continue taking his kid to little league game if his team has little chance of winning the next game?
It's all about perseverance. You never know how things will turn out. Anyone ever try to pick the trifecta at the track based on handicapping the horses? Yeah, good luck with that!
I've never voted in an election for who I thought could win, but rather the candidate that spoke for me. Encouraging a candidate to just give up is a terrible suggestion. If the only candidate I intended to vote for dropped out, what reason would I have to go to the polls?
Encouraging the least richest candidates or ones who poll poorly to drop out five months ahead of time before things heat up is really poor advice. One might argue weak candidates are diluting the money pool for the rest of political party. My response to that is who else but the donors should be best left to decide who gets what?
Five months is a long time in politics given the 24 hours news cycle. Ask Anthony Wiener.
Heads up-- I still haven't counted Pa. AG Kathleen Kane out as a possible candidate. Regarding Kathleen, John Micek has some questions of his own about her fund raising activities at Pennlive.com.
A race is never won until the race is run. Anyone who picks up their marbles and goes home now didn't deserve to win in the first place.
