There's been a brouhaha going on over the new comment policy changes made on Google's YouTube site. Rather then me trying to explain the changes I have posted the following video laced with cursing made by this fella posted on September 26, 2013.
A long time user, 'Old Goat', also had this to say...
I've been on the internet since the old days of the dial up 26k telephone modems. It began back in those days where the only places you could visit were with other people who would maintain a BBS (Bulletin Board System). In those days you'd actually have the computer call dial their telephone number to visit and upload/download files. Some had a huge number of small files. Others not very many.
The way some of them worked was for every file you uploaded, you would then be permitted to download two or more files. These were housed on their home computer. I particularly liked 'The Father & Son' BBS based in Whitehall, Pa. since I wasn't charged for a long distance call. There was no such thing as 'caller ID' nor all inclusive long distance packages. Therefore privacy wasn't as big an issue as opposed to how much one might spend making a call.
The advice I was given back in those days is more important now then ever before...
Keep your name and information private as you possibly can.
There couldn't have been more then a few hundred of us in the Lehigh Valley at that time. These days, just about everybody is now on the internet. This includes stalkers, pedophiles, haters, thieves and who knows how many of other kinds of mentally ill persons are lurking about. Thousands and thousands of them, that's for sure!
These days people are now expected to give up as much personally identifiable information as possible to these large corporate owned websites. Some require a phone number and actual name before one can use their services. Alarmingly this is the direction all are headed. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to name but three. I cannot overstate emphatically enough that no one, under any circumstance should ever give up their real identity unless it's absolutely necessary. Perhaps to make a purchase, pay online bills or a few like them.
To do otherwise one might as well stand in the middle of a crowded street with a sign reveling their telephone number, address and actual name to every nut that could be driving by. Why would you? You'd have to be crazy. Well the internet's no different. In fact even crazier since millions can view your information.
YES IT IS!
Jessica's Story
If YouTube continues to insists on going down this path, it will be it's own demise for 10,000's thousands of it's current long time users.
Don't kid yourself, none of these corporate owned social media websites give a shit about your safety. It's up to each individual to protect themselves by refusing to trade off their safety in exchange for some sort of presence on the net or leave a comment. It's simply not worth it. I don't care how many people tell you otherwise.
Lord knows I've been criticized many times on this blog for remaining anonymous.
Well that isn't ever going to change even if I have to one day give up this blog. I refuse to expose my wife, son, daughter and grand kids. Just because I enjoy blogging doesn't mean they should be exposed to risk.
For that matter, neither should I. It looks like more then a few others also agree.
