* Today 13.04% of us in the United States are 65 or older. Of that only 1.78% will live to see beyond their 85th birthday.
* Many of the government workers get their Social Security benefits cut by 66% for every dollar they receive from their pensions.
* Some government workers do not pay in to Social Security therefore get no benefits at all from it. (17% of all workers in the United States are employed by the federal, state or local governments).
* If someone retires at 62 they get only 75% of their full Social Security benefits (which for many now would be at age 66).
* In 2012 someone can earn up to $14,640 a year who's under their full retirement age. Then $1 is reduced for every $2 earned. At full retirement age it is $38,880 and $1 for every $3 earned.
As you readily see there are far fewer who are a burden to the Social Security system as some would have you believe.
At the median age those currently receiving Social Security is around less the 4.2% of the population.
Now factor in the reductions I mentioned.
If there's a scam going on with Social Security it is by those who wish to reduce it or take it away all together.
When government reduces the paycheck withholding percentages, places too low a withholding cap and creates future debt by borrowing from it, opponents are creating a bogus crises.
There's no good reason on God's green Earth that a country who claims to be the richest nation can't provide a little something to it's former workers. This especially given the fact that not one thin dime of Social Security is funded by anyone other then the workers themselves and their employers.
Today's workers pay for their parents. Those who are now paying should be secure in knowing that someday their kids will help pay for theirs. For they too will one day become old.
I'll leave with this one final thought. Just suppose in 20 or 30 years there were no Social Security. Is this really what we want to happen?
