Road To Hell Paved With Gold

You might have read about the couple out in California who stumbled across millions of dollar$ worth of gold coins on their property. I held off posting about this story till after the shoe dropped. Now it looks like it may have.

According to reports, under California law anyone coming across 'lost' items worth over $250 are supposed to report that to the police. If no one lays claim after 90 days the finder gets to keep it. This is where the law gets sticky. Was it 'lost' or was it 'abandoned property'? The law treats the two differently.

Yeah I can see it now. There'll be more legal beagles and their clients descending on this couple then there were locusts in Egypt when Noah went head-to-head with the Pharaoh.

Their troubles may not end there. The U.S. Government's treasury department may want to get in on the action. The couple also fears if it should ever be known where they live every nut with a metal detector will show up in their backyard.

Between the government possibly taking a sizable chuck for taxes, hiring a team of lawyers, accountants and security to protect themselves and their property from trespassers, I doubt there will be too much left in the end.

This could end up being a bigger headache then it's worth.

It reminds me of one of those stories Rod Serling fictionalized about when someone was tricked by the devil. Everything being a means of entrapment rather then finding happiness in what was assumed to be their good fortune.

Gosh I hope I never stumble across gold coins in my back yard. And if I ever do I've learned one thing from this... keep your big trap shut.
