Historical Videos Of Trains In The Lehigh Valley

Published on Feb 5, 2013
"This is a preview of Along the Jersey Central Volume 1. The Jersey Central was an anthracite coal hauling railroad which extended from Jersey City to Scranton Pennsylvania. Known for its lady "Liberty" herald and unique paint schemes, the Jersey Central was a favorite among railfans.

In volume 1 of Along the Jersey Central, we'll look at steam and first generation diesel operations from Jersey to Jim Thorpe, between the late 1940's to the early 1960's through the films of Charlie & Ken Bealer, the Randolph Kulp collection of the Lehigh Valley Chapter and the Arthur Angstadt collection.

We begin with a steam farewell fan trip in Jersey and then proceed west to Phillipsburg, NJ and into Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, passenger and freight operations at Bethlehem Station, Bethlehem Engine Terminal, Allentown Yard, the Allentown Terminal Railroad and more are featured."

Fortunately some of these old trains are still working. They can be found at various museums.

"Ex-Lehigh Valley Railroad ALCO RS-3m #211 is started for the first time in 2012 at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum.

After pre-lubing the EMD 567B prime mover and loading the cooling water amongst other maintenance items, the cylinder pressure reliefs are spun out (actually one was removed too as you will see and hear) and the engine turned over with the fuel pump off. This allows condensation and any other contaminants in the cylinders to be exhausted to the outside. Once that is complete, the reliefs are spun back in tight, the fuel pump started, and the engine started as can be seen in this video shot late on Tuesday evening, June 5, 2012.",

"Watch LV112 return to the rails under her own power. This is the first test run for LV112 as she drills cars in the Ringoes yard and takes a trip to Flemington station. Filmed in April 2012.
