More On Wehr's Dam Removal Controversy

See: Rebels with a cause rally to save Wehr's Dam

Proponents who support removal of the Jordan Creek's Wehr Dam in South Whitehall Township argue that warmer less oxygenated water behind the dam is a determent to fish. They also argue it prevents fish from traveling freely upstream and down.

That may be a valid argument under normal weather conditions. However...August 02, 1999 - by ELIZABETH BARTOLAI (A free-lance story for The Morning Call)"Heather Zellers said there also was no water in the Jordan Creek at Covered Bridge Park near Wehr's Dam on Wednesday. It was there that anglers rescued fish trapped in small pools of water July 21.

Chris Kocher, director of the Wildlands Conservancy Rivers Program, said low-water conditions are high stress times for water ecosystems. Zellers said that as the water level drops, fish become trapped in small pools, then die when those pools eventually dry up.

A portion of the creek also is dry in North Whitehall Township near Cedar Crest Boulevard. Zellers said the creek flows over limestone in that area, and because the groundwater levels are low, the water is seeping into the ground. "It was dry in that section last summer also," Zellers said, adding that the Jordan usually doesn't dry up there until August."

September 11, 2001 - By RON DEVLIN Of The Morning Call" Wehr's Dam in South Whitehall Township is drying up. And the bed of Jordan Creek, which flows from the dam, is already parched and lined with dead fish."

Removal of this dam would serve to exasperate the problem fish already have when trying to survive under these conditions when they occur. If you will note in the first article it said, "..anglers rescued fish trapped in small pools of water." Let it be said crappy water is better then no water at all. At least fish stand a chance of being rescued.

According to a U.S. Geological Survey published in 1968 "Jordan Creek has been dry during part of the Summer or Fall in at least 15 of the last 32 years." The full U.S. Geological Survey pdf file can also be found HERE. Search for Jordan Creek. WARNING: The File Is Large

This is why I've stated time and again ya might get away with dam removals on other creeks and rivers, but not Wehr's dam on the Jordan Creek. It doesn't have near the consistent water flow of these others.

There's not a doubt in my mind by removing this dam, from time to time instead of picnickers enjoying the dam they will be looking over a dried creek bed along with the smell of rotting fish.

That is if fish can even exist in the creek if the dam should be removed.

Allentown, PA Lil'-Le-Hi Trout Nursery Fish Kill

"Mike Walck, a volunteer at Allentown's fish hatchery, explains how 1,400 fish were killed during a heavy rain storm on July 14, 2014 at the Lil-Le-Hi Trout Nursery.

He and other volunteers believe recent dam removals may have attributed to the increased water flow.

The trout, a mixture of brown, brook and rainbow, were adult-size and part of the stock scheduled to be released in waterways throughout city parks during the 2015 trout season."

"Amish Outlaws" Knocked It Out Of The Park

Last night (Sat., August 2, 2014) at Musikfest 2014 in Bethlehem, Pa. 'The Amish Outlaws' knocked it out of the park. I've never seen a larger crowd gathered at "Festplatz" ever in the 31 years of it's existence. There were hundreds of people who stood outside the tent that couldn't fit underneath!

I was hoping someone would have posted to 'YouTube' some of the band's performance. Failing to find a video, here's one I found at Vimeo.com which is a compilation video of their performance five years ago. It will give you some idea of what they are all about and how popular they've become.

A mini AMISH OUTLAWS SHOW from Denise Martin (Abydab Films) on Vimeo.

If I come across any of Saturday Night's August 2nd, 2014 performance on YouTube I will add it here later. Anyone who has 'Service Electric Cable TV' can probably watch Saturday's performance with SECTV's 'Video On Demand' service.

Heads Up A Broadway Revival Musical Is Coming

"On The Town"

The musical is coming to the Lyric Theatre (213 W. 42nd St). The theatre has undergone several name changes over the years. It's the same theatre where "Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark" closed this past January. The wife & I saw two most excellent musicals at this same theatre. "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" in 2005 and "Ragtime" back in 1999.

This upcoming rival of "On The Town" will go into previews beginning at 8:00 PM on Saturday, September 20, 2014 and it's official opening is scheduled for Thursday, October 16th, 2014. It will feature a 30 member cast.

I always recommend people buy tickets while shows are in their previews. (1) Tickets are a lot easier to get on the day you desire. (2) After a show opens you may not be able to get tickets before some of the original cast members leave the show. (3) Sometimes while the show is still in previews the director (along with some of the members of the cast) will come out after the show to solicit feedback and do some Q&A's.

Here's a video they've released to publicize this up coming Broadway musical

Israeli War On Gaza

Some quotes that seem applicable to my thoughts concerning this assault on the Palestinians.

"Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime."
~Ernest Hemingway~

"War does not determine who is right - only who is left."
~Bertrand Russell~

"When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die."
~Jean-Paul Sartre~

"What is human warfare but just this; an effort to make the laws of God and nature take sides with one party."
~Henry David Thoreau~

"Patriots always talk of dying for their country and never of killing for their country."
~Bertrand Russell~

"Wanton killing of innocent civilians is terrorism, not a war against terrorism."
~Noam Chomsky~

A Quick Summary Of The Problem
The Palestinians (right or wrong) consider themselves much like the Native Americans whose land was taken from them. The Israeli's want to just be left alone. However they had a hand in some of the problems they are now facing.

Even though Palestinians have acted like jerks, Israel has imposed overly harsh restrictions on Gaza. Even so that's no excuse for Palestinians to perpetuate vengeance for all eternity. They need to acknowledge and accept they no longer hold the rights to all of the land in that area of the world.

It takes two to start a fight and it takes two to end it. We have higher expectations from Israel then Palestinians whom they claim are terrorists. There's a way of going about this in a much more humanitarian way then incurring a 85% causality rate among civilians who have little or nothing to do with the threats against Israel. Carpet bombing everything in site is not what the world expects of Israel.

Israel has every right to defend itself. No one questions that, but turning Gaza into a pile of rubble, boxing in innocent parents and children killing them can only result in more future hatred.

With power comes responsibility. Wars are not won on the battlefield but in hearts and minds of the people. So far Israel seems to have neglected to focus on that fact.

Here's What Israel Needs To Do
(1) Provide safe havens and medical areas for those who deserve mercy. (2) Show the same respect for them as they would for their own. (3) Recognize the right for these innocents to exist even if when their political representatives won't extend the same rights to Israel. This is what separates a nation of goodwill from those who perpetuate evil in this world.

My intention is not to be critical of Israel. Rather to remind them how much the Jewish people suffered under Hitler and not repeat the same mistakes. Ethnic cleansing is not a solution. Israel needs to lead by example. Not by the use of superior force. Otherwise this suffering and conflict will go on forever

If Israel is to be shown favor in God's eyes they need to show why they think they deserve to be "God's Chosen People". To do otherwise places such a belief in doubt.

San Francisco- Gentrification Gone Wild!

"San Francisco’s out of control housing market passed an ominous new milestone last month when the median selling price for houses and condominiums hit seven figures for the first time... The technology's industry's rapid growth coupled with 49-square-mile San Francisco's constrained supply of housing is a big part of the story behind the city's ascension to a rarified real estate bracket."

My Comments About The Article Above
Everybody wants their city to thrive, however when it goes over the top it can be a bad thing. Especially for long time residents. Home values have increased several times their value of what they were a few years ago. That's a bad thing for someone not wanting to sell or move. These are now seeing their appraisals soaring along with property taxes that accompany them.

It was pointed out in the article many of the older homes aren't looking any better then they did before. That's of little wonder considering buyers most likely have emptied their wallets just to purchase the house. They along with the longtime homeowners who face ever increasing taxes on them.

I question why people who already have a job relocate in an area like this in the first place. What's the point if someone lands a job that pays five times more if it costs five times more to live there? So too I wonder how many stop and think how much more they'll have to shell out in higher income taxes. Some workers outside of S.F. might as well stay where they are when wages versus costs (not to mention moving costs) ends up being less then what they already have.

Then there's this thing I call a game of musical chairs. What happens when the music stops? Tech companies can pack up and leave just as easily as they came. When tech company office space can be had for dimes on the dollar somewhere else they aren't going to stick around forever.

Still some might consider the move because they somehow believe they will be living with a better class of people. Here's a flash, money doesn't buy class. Some of these same people may find they traded away living amongst low income assholes for more affluent ones.

I'm not against a city or people improving their incomes and lives. However history shows us there were thriving towns thousands once moved with their families to pan for gold. When they got there, so too they found prices were through the roof. The gold ran out. Now those towns look worse then Motown after the automotive industry left for greener pastures.

Timing is everything. You got to know when to get in and when to get out. Not everyone is going to end up a winner. One should consider their fate if they should happen to be there when the music stops. It's important to understand these kind of things never last.
