A city this size deserves strong reporting. Will it be possible given the present business climate for newspapers?
I have a lot of thoughts but will save them for comments if others express an interest. I will say this much. While the small local news media struggles, investigative reporting is impossible. It takes time and money. Nearly everything folks read on the local internet comes from others who have to work for a living. People who don't have the kind of time needed to invest in this kind of thing. Only a paid person who does it for a living would.
I certainly hope the Morning Call will continue to be published.
ReplyDeleteSome people have been critical of TMC. I too hope it will continue. It beats the alternative, almost a news blackout in this area. Other LV media (w/o giving TMC attribution) are also somewhat dependent on TMC for news stories they may have never otherwise been aware of.
DeleteThe other point worth mentioning. Most TV news stories last less then 2 minutes. Even less on the network evening programs at 6:30 PM. Some far less. The print media can provide far more in-depth information. Very few TV reporters do any kind of investigative reporting because of the costs involved.
ReplyDeleteI firmly believe lack of news coverage of local government allows elected officials to Do bizarre things that the public isn't aware of
