Allentown Parks Recreation Director Resigns

Emily Opilo Of The Morning Call is reporting "Less than a year and a half after taking the job, Allentown director of Parks and Recreation John Mikowychok has resigned... Allentown spokesman Michael Moore said Mikowychok wanted to spend more time in Downingtown with his wife and family... Property records show he and his wife bought a house in Allentown in July 2013."

A year ago Mikowychok said, "I am very excited to come to Allentown”

It was just last year on August 17th, 2013 Michael Molovinsky wrote about "Walking With The New Park Director".

What caused the bloom to go off the rose?
What's the real story?

We have relatives in Downingtown. Trust me it's not that far away. This is either a personal family matter (which is none of our business) or a policy disagreement. Either way we're not getting to the core of as to why he quit. Nor does it explain why out of the 821,623 people (according to the 2010 census) living in the Lehigh Valley we can't find someone qualified within to oversee Allentown's parks.

Why is it when it comes to mayors and department heads we always look towards people who come from elsewhere?

It's been said many of the residents have no stake in Allentown's future since they are transient and come from elsewhere. How much more so too when it's leaders do as well. This is just one more example of that.

  1. Why do WE look elsewhere for someone to watch over out parks? WE don't, but unfortunately too many of US continue to vote for an out of town mayor who has no appreciation for what makes this town great, and his flunkies on council that do his bidding.

But all that and more (like selling our water system) will quickly be forgotten when the new Colosseum, I mean Arena, is built.

Never mind that it was built with our tax dollars, and diverted hundreds of millions from children's health programs. WE need our games to distract us from reality.

Until WE throw those idiots out, WE deserve what we get.
