LVCI: Biking For Dummies

Lessons learned the hard way from personal experience.

  1. LVCI, Funny as hell. This should be mandatory viewing for anyone who rides a bike.

Loved the start at Blue Marsh. Decades ago, I participated in a team race at Blue Marsh that involved running, swimming, cycling and canoeing. Every one of us was a "highly conditioned, well-trained athlete," including the female that every team had to have. One week before the race, our female discovered she was pregnant and bowed out. The substitute had done zero training, so we were in trouble at the onset. I won the first leg of the race, which was a one-mile downhill race. I was feeling pretty damn good until the next phaSE, a 1/4 mile swim. I finished last. I remember a boat came out and asked if I needed assistance. "I'd rather drown," I told my savior. We then had a cycling event that included a small stream. Most people were riding thru it. I followed suit, hit a rock and went over. I was covered in mud from head to toe. Then we had a 10k run. Our best runner, who actually once climbed Mount Everest, took off way ahead of us all. We assumed he would be waiting for us. But when we got to the finish, he was nowhere to be found. He got lost. Finally we canoed. We all sucked at that, and went backwards, sideways and rolled over a few times. We still finished #23 out of 25 teams. It's the most fun I ever had in a race. Thanks for bringing back a great memory.
