What percentage of Americans are Democrats?

According to Google-- As of October 2017, Gallup polling found that 31% of Americans identified as Democrat, 24% identified as Republican, and 42% as Independent.

As I watched Trump at his latest rally in Nevada trashing anything and all things of the Democratic Party I was curious how many identified themselves with it. According to that poll Trump managed to alienate almost a third of the people he's also supposed to represent. Not to mention quite possibly the other 42% who consider themselves independents.

Question is whether the votes cast in the next election a few weeks from now will reflect these numbers?

  1. I enjoy your blog.I have always had a concern that so many citizens consider themselves independent. If this is the case why do most incumbents continue to be re-elected and districts seem to be either Democratic or Republican year after year

    1. There's something to the argument for term limits. I'd prefer voters would take it upon themselves to limit the number of terms through their voting. I can understand why some would prefer leaving someone who is doing a great job in office. However this is not usually what happens. Name recognition alone seems to carry the day.

Such being the case I'm leaning toward term limits. There's not one of us who can't be replaced in our jobs. Theirs should be no exception. I'm sure out of a population of 325+ million we ought to be able to come up enough who might want the job

Perhaps two 4 year terms for the house. Two 5 year terms for the Senate. This would more then half the wasted time campaigning while in office (especially not having to do one in their final term).

Cut down the amount we spend on pensions too while we're at it since it'll only take up 8 or 10 years of the working years.
