Let's Talk About The Keystone XL Pipeline

Robert J. Samuelson says in the Washington Post "Rejecting the Keystone pipeline is an act of insanity"

Critics came out swinging against President Obama putting the kibosh to it, at least for now. There might be more then a few reasons to give this a second look. Not just from the environmental impacts, but so too for the reasons given for supporting construction of the 36 inch pipeline itself.

A number of people are squawking that it will increase America's energy independence. Not so fast The Keystone XL pipeline is more then a pipeline to import crude from Canada. The pipeline will end up at Port Arthur, Texas. Where it is expected that around 20% of the goo will end up being exported from there. Since Port Arthur is located in a "Foreign Trade Zone" that means it can be sold and exported duty tax free. So much for the arguments based on "energy independence". Here's a second source which contains the same information.

Did you know we already have excess pipeline capacity coming down from Canada? Enough excess capacity to last us for years to come.

The job estimates are being blown out of proportion too. The administration estimates only about 6,000 jobs and most of those will last only over the two years it will take to construct the pipeline.

Whether this Keystone XL pipeline goes through or doesn't go through, isn't a national crises. Nice if it does. The world won't end if we don't. Why all the fuss? Follow the money trail.
